Snuggle up with a new sofa for winter

Snuggle up with a new sofa for winter

It’s a fantastic time to create a warm, cosy ambience within your home. Now that winter is firmly upon us, it’s time to re-evaluate your key pieces of furniture to ensure maximum comfort for the colder months.

Your choice of sofa is one of the greatest furniture commitments you will make, so it’s worth getting it right and investing in a piece that will last you for many years to come.

How big should you go?
First you need to decide exactly how much of your living room you want your sofa to fill. Getting the size wrong can be a disaster: too big, and it will overpower everything, or even worse, not leave enough room to walk around; too small, and it won’t be the feature you want it to be.

Use a paper template to test the size and position in the room; it will also give you a feel for how the finished item will fit with your other furniture.

With less space any sofa is going to be in the spotlight, so it's important to pick something that is practical, but is also of a strong design or colour that carries and complements the rest of the space. Also think about buying a sofa with low arms, it’ll make your room look larger.

Choosing the best shape for your space and lifestyle
Successfully organising a living space starts with analysing your lifestyle. What do you do the most in that space?

Do you spend your evenings in front of the TV? Make sure your sofa faces that way comfortably. Does your family use the living room to relax and read? Surround your sofa with multiple seating areas that can be enjoyed together. A spot to snooze by the fire? Go for comfy and traditional.

If you love to host dinner parties or social events, consider how many people you entertain regularly and ensure you can fit them in with ease. A semi circle around a central table can work very well or a clean L-shape or corner sofa is perfect for gatherings of any kind, as you can seat more people in a smaller space. In fact corner sofas actually give the appearance of a larger room.

If you're looking for a sofa that will be the focal point of your living room, look for rounder shapes that take up a bit more room and provide a lot of seating.

A footstool can also be a wonderful addition to the living room for those wanting to bring in a multi-functional element, adding extra style, comfort, colour and extra storage.

Style and texture
With so much choice it can be hard to decide what style to go for, but go with your gut instinct and choose a sofa that will fit naturally in your home. Aesthetic is important, but functionality is vital when it comes to choosing a material for your sofa. Whatever fabric you choose, it is best to take a sample to test the colour with everything else in your living room.

Accessorise
Hone the look and feel you’re trying to achieve by accessorising your new sofa with beautiful, sumptuous cushions, soft throws and blankets to ensure the room evokes as much comfort as possible.
