Prepare your home for a cosy autumn

Prepare your home for a cosy autumn

Hygge, the Danish concept of living cosily, is the key trend for this season and it couldn’t have come at a better time…

After all the doom and gloom 2016 has presented us with, hygge (pronounced ‘hoo-gah’) brings some welcome relief. Its philosophy of wellness and relaxation is perfect for autumn – opting for a cosier lifestyle is a wonderful way to bring in the colder months. Hygge is gaining massive popularity (nine books on the subject are being published this September) so it is certainly the time to embrace all that it offers.

It’s a lifestyle choice that allows you to relax, enjoy the simple things and slow down life’s hectic pace. It’s about enjoying your home and turning it into a haven to escape from the demands and stresses of everyday life – a place to switch off and put your feet up.

Create a happy home
From an interior design perspective, this is the ideal opportunity to take your house look happy and cosy. Think about ambience: you are trying to create that feeling you get when curled up in front of a fire at home with soft, warm lighting, your favourite tipple and some lovingly homemade comfort food – heaven!
Danish homes are the epitome of hygge – lots of wood, leather, homely smells and tactile finishing touches with the emphasis on comfort, such as decadent throws, rugs and cushions.
Hygge is all about being kind to yourself and not feeling guilty about it, allowing yourself to enjoy indulging in a hot chocolate and a delicious piece of cake or getting cosy with the Sunday papers and the cat purring on your lap.
According to scientists at University College London, looking at beautiful things makes us happier by stimulating dopamine – so think about what gives you a warm glow inside and allow yourself to have it.
Flowers are, of course, the perfect way to give yourself a treat. Silk flowers are a growing trend and are a fantastic solution for long lasting blooms and colour – perfect for cheering us up in the gloomy months of the year. These days you can find beautifully arranged bouquets which are incredibly lifelike.

Spend time with the ones you love
A very important part of Hygge is spending time with family and loved ones and enjoying other people’s company, so ensure your home is inviting and sociable.
Think about investing in a super comfy large sofa with luxurious hard wearing fabric and plenty of cushions – no one will be able to resist staying a little longer in the comfort of your home.
Or perhaps you need a new round dining table and comfortable chairs upholstered in sumptuous velvet? Perfect for hosting dinner parties or Sunday lunches and highly conducive for a social atmosphere, fun and laughter will certainly be the tonic you need to warm up the chilly nights!
